Artist biography

Paul Wall

Paul Wall is a Houston rapper, DJ and entrepreneur whose career is closely tied to the rise of Houston hip-hop from its independent mixtape culture to international prominence. Emerging through the city’s late-1990s and early-2000s scene, Wall became associated with Swishahouse and developed an important early partnership with Chamillionaire. Their work together included the independent album Get Ya Mind Correct, helping establish both artists before Houston’s major national breakthrough.

Wall’s profile expanded dramatically during the mid-2000s. His appearance with Mike Jones and Slim Thug on “Still Tippin’” became one of the signature recordings of Houston’s national emergence. In 2005, Wall released The Peoples Champ, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and included records such as “Sittin’ Sidewayz,” featuring Big Pokey, and “They Don’t Know.” His appearance on Nelly’s “Grillz,” alongside Ali and Gipp, further expanded his national audience and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

Beyond recording, Paul Wall became closely identified with Houston’s slab, automotive and custom-jewelry cultures. His longtime connection with Houston jeweler Johnny Dang helped bring custom grill culture to a worldwide audience, while the nickname “The People’s Champ” became an enduring part of Wall’s identity. He continued recording well beyond his initial commercial breakthrough, with projects including Get Money, Stay True, Heart of a Champion, The Po-Up Poet, Slab God, The Houston Oiler, Mind Over Matter and The Great Wall.

Dammit Boy Productions Archive

Dammit Boy Productions’ archive preserves original footage of Paul Wall within the Houston community and slab culture closely associated with his career. On August 17, 2014, DBP documented the Baby Slab Back 2 Skool Block Party & School Supply Drive in Houston. Surviving production materials include original camera footage, photographs, the event flyer and Paul Wall interview project material. The DBP archive also preserves a finished Paul Wall interview associated with Wickett Crickett‘s coverage of the event.

The surviving event documentation presents the gathering as both a slab event and community school-supply drive, calling for attendees to bring school supplies, backpacks, and new or used clothing. Event materials document Paul Wall alongside Houston community and cultural connections that included Johnny Dang, CStone and Parents Against Predators. The footage provides DBP with a firsthand record of Wall participating in Houston culture outside the conventional album-release and concert setting.

DBP documented Paul Wall again on November 14, 2015, during the #SlabSaturday / 40 Mac Birthday Celebration at Club Zona Latina in Houston. The archive contains Paul Wall performance material along with footage associated with 40 Mac, Gringo The MC and Jhiame. This appearance occurred during Wall’s Slab God period, shortly after the album’s September 2015 release, and DBP footage connects the event with his performance of “Swangin’ in the Rain.”

Together, the surviving 2014 and 2015 material gives Dammit Boy Productions a multi-year archival record of Paul Wall spanning Houston community outreach, slab culture, interviews and live performance. Rather than documenting Wall solely at the height of his national commercial breakthrough, the DBP archive captures his continued presence within the Houston culture from which his career emerged.
