Artist biography
Insane Poetry is an influential underground hip-hop artist and pioneering force in the horrorcore movement. Originally formed in Los Angeles in 1988 by Cyco (formerly Psycho), Insane Poetry became one of the earliest artists to fuse hardcore street lyricism with horror-inspired storytelling, cinematic imagery, and socially conscious underground rap themes.
The group first gained attention with the release of the 1988 single “Twelve Strokes Till Midnight,” widely recognized as one of the earliest true horrorcore recordings. Their groundbreaking 1992 debut album Grim Reality became a cult classic in underground hip-hop, blending slasher-film atmospheres, psychological storytelling, and real-world social commentary in a way that helped define the genre’s identity.
Over the years, Insane Poetry built a respected legacy through releases including Blacc Plague, Faith in Chaos, Fallen From Grace, Violent Art, and numerous underground collaborations. The project evolved from a group into Cyco’s long-running solo platform while continuing to maintain its dark, uncompromising artistic vision.
Known for combining horror aesthetics with authentic street realism, Insane Poetry earned recognition throughout underground hip-hop culture as a pioneer of independent horror-themed rap music. The project’s influence can still be heard across horrorcore, hardcore underground rap, and dark cinematic hip-hop scenes today.
Beyond the music itself, Insane Poetry represents an era of true independent underground culture — building a loyal cult following through authenticity, live performances, underground distribution, and collaborations within the horrorcore and independent rap communities, including connections to groups like Nightbreed and other influential underground movements.
